The State Council of the P.R.C (the “State Council”) and the Central Military Commission gave an official reply regarding the construction plan of the Tumxuk Airport in China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in which they expressed their approval the project. The approval marks the beginning of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps’ construction of a second regional airport in China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The airport will be located 15 kilometers from Tumxuk’s city center, and will also serve the nearby counties of Bachu and Kalpin. The airport will be constructed in adherence to domestic regional airport criteria. When constructed, it will be operated and managed by the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps and will be administrated by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC). Flights to Urumqi, Kashi, Hetian, Korla will be the first to open. Besides serving commercial aviation, the airport will also handle general aviation needs, such as emergency response, rescue, and disaster relief. It is projected to handle 80,000 passengers annually by 2020.

The city of Tumxuk is located in the hinterland of south Xinjiang. Since its establishment in 2004, the economic and social development of Tumxuk has grown quickly. However, due to its outdated traffic infrastructure, its opening-up and attraction of outside investment has been limited. The construction of the airport will improve the local traffic conditions and the regional air traffic network, finally enlarging the scope of commercial exchange and promoting economic development.
