On June 16, the Delingha Airport celebrated receiving its first batch of passengers from Xi Ning Airport, officially placing the airport into commission. Construction on the Delingha Airport began on May 27th, 2011 and is considered to be the main project of Qinghai Province during the Twelfth Five-year plan period.
Delingha Airport is located in the Tsaidam Basin, a direct 29 km from downtown. The total investment is 630 million Yuan. It is a category C airport with a 3000 meter long runway, which can accommodate the B737-700, A319, ARJ21 and other similarly sized airplanes. The terminal, which has 4 parking bays and covers an area of 4,400 square meters, is designed to accommodate 160 thousand passengers per year by 2020.
Delhi airport is a distinctive "High Altitude Green Airport", with an elevation of 2862 meters. 1,800 acres of grass and 220 acres of shrubs were planted at the airport perimeter. The airport also planted 1,600 acres of trees on the airfield area.
During the "Twelfth Five-year" period, Qinghai province proposed the construction of 6 regional airports, which included the Delingha Airport, Huatugou Airport, Dawu Airport, Qilian Airport, Qinghai Lake Airport, and Huangnan Airport. So far, the construction projects of the Xi Ning and Golmud Airports have finished, with Delingha airport soon to follow. The other airports are currently under construction.
