On July 12, Terminal 2 of the Nanjing Lukou International Airport was put into use. The project was started on April 1st, 2011 and was completed after three years’ construction. The new airfield area and apron covers an area of 13.708 million square meters, which includes a runway, two parallel taxiways, and two perpendicular taxiways. Also included was the design and construction of 27 buildings that cover an area of 539 thousand square meters, as well as 22 new and improved roads in the airport area. The airport was constructed to accommodate 30 million passengers, 800 thousand tons of cargo and 260 thousand take-offs and landings annually by the year 2020.
Following the opening of its new Terminal 2, Nanjing Lukou International Airport became the 4th dual-runway airport in eastern China. The airport categorization was upgraded to 4F, allowing it to operate the A380, B747-8 and other heavy aircraft.
