According to an August 1 statement from the CAAC, by the year of 2017 there will be 48 civil airports in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, making air transportation service accessible to up to 83% of the province’s counties and 92% of its population.
Inner Mongolia’s vast territory and rich natural resources give it a unique advantage in developing air transportation. In recent years, Inner Mongolia has been doing well in commuter airline operation, general aviation business and regional airport construction. Alxa League became the nation’s first commuter aviation test zone, while Hulun Buir’s general aviation pilot program has spread, providing civil aviation service to the whole Inner Mongolia region. Up to now there are 25 civil airports in total.
By the end of 2013, airports in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region operated 271 routes to 75 cities. There are a total of 35 airlines operating in Inner Mongolia's aviation market.
